GlobalWelsh founder Walter May completes 196 mile walk raising £3,000 for Urdd Gobaith Cymru

31 May, 2023

31st May; Cardiff, Wales: GlobalWelsh today announces that its founder, Walter May, has completed his ambitious 196-mile trek along the iconic Portuguese Camino raising over £3,000 for GlobalWelsh’s Charity Partner of the Year, Urdd Gobaith Cymru. Walter completed the journey in just 16 consecutive days, starting on 4th May in Porto, Portugal, and ending in Santiago de Compostela, Spain on 19th May.

“I am over the moon that we smashed our fundraising target and hugely humbled to be giving twenty one Welsh children the opportunity to have a summer holiday"

The funds raised so far will now give 21 Welsh children the opportunity to attend an Urdd Summer Camp via the charity’s ‘Fund for All’ scheme. Fund for All, is a scheme that was set up to ensure that every child in Wales gets the opportunity to enjoy a summer holiday, whatever their background or financial circumstance and offers full funding to attend summer camps for those from low-income households.

On the walk Walter was joined by a group of fellow Welshmen which included Urdd Gobaith Cymru Mascot, Mistar Urdd, who proved to be an integral part of the team and who’s shenanigans, including visiting the flight deck of the outward bound plane to Porto, on the Camino made him a star on GlobalWelsh’s social channels.

Walter commented:

“I am over the moon that we smashed our fundraising target and hugely humbled to be giving twenty one Welsh children the opportunity to have a summer holiday, and what a holiday it will be thanks to the brilliant work of the Urdd. Thank you to everyone who donated it means so much.”

“It was an incredible experience but I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t a challenge. It’s the longest Camino route I’ve walked, without a break and it was tougher terrain than other routes, meaning lots of blisters which proved difficult to manage. But with the help of various foot treatments and gritted teeth, we managed to get to the end relatively unscathed.”
