The LA-based student and a 'quintessential' summer in London
- Born and raised in Usk, Monmouthshire
- Los Angeles & London
My name is Tom Davies, I was born and raised in Usk, Monmouthshire. Tennis has always been a huge part of my life and has taken me to some amazing places around the world. In 2017, aged 18, I decided to further my education alongside playing tennis in the United States and I moved out to Los Angeles. This was definitely one of the best decisions I have ever made. I'm now 21 and going into the last year at Whittier College where I am majoring in Business Administration and Economics.
"I wanted to look for an internship in London to broaden my work experience. I thought that the GlobalWelsh community would be a great place to start."
This summer I decided that I wanted to look for an internship in London to broaden my work experience. I thought that the GlobalWelsh community would be a great place to start. I’d first heard about GlobalWelsh through its founder Walter May, and Walter kindly offered to help me. He put me in contact with one of the co-founders of a company called Quintessentially, Aaron Simpson, a GlobalWelsh Pioneer. Quintessentially is one of the world’s leading luxury lifestyle management companies with over 60 offices located around the world.
Aaron kindly offered me the internship opportunity I was looking for so I packed my bags and off I went for a fantastic summer in London...
A learning curve...
I learned so much during my internship. I gained experience of everything from business communications and sales to networking, contracts and RFPs. The experience I had was second to none and I loved every minute. I met some amazing people and made some great connections for the future too.

Once in a lifetime experiences...
Quintessentially work with the world’s leading luxury brands and I was lucky enough to accompany my boss to a lot of these meetings. Just being there, listening and learning, and observing how business deals are dealt with start to finish was amazing and so insightful.
I also had the opportunity to go on a VIP tour at McLaren HQ which was incredible. I was shown around all of the previous champions race cars, the testing area, the factory and all of the trophies - that was a real standout!
"It’s taught me that being smart and educated is great but creating connections and building a network is crucial - something I definitely underestimated."
The whole experience was transformational for me in as far as it’s prompted me to reevaluate my career goals and how I will approach my future and it has really motivated me to work hard in both my academic studies and my tennis.
It’s definitely has changed my outlook on business and especially how business is conducted. It’s also taught me that being smart and educated is great but creating connections and building a network is crucial - something I definitely underestimated.
This experience has given me the confidence to know that I will be able to build on this experience and make more informed decisions about where I go and what I do with my career moving forward and I now have some great connections I can call on.
"I feel so lucky to have had this opportunity through GlobalWelsh and Quintessentially - all the new connections I’ve made and new experiences I’ve had that will definitely help to shape my future career."
Looking to the future…
I am now back in LA and reflecting on a great summer. I feel so lucky to have had this opportunity through GlobalWelsh and Quintessentially - all the new connections I’ve made and new experiences I’ve had that will definitely help to shape my future career.
It’s safe to say that if there’s one thing I’ve learned it’s that having connections and building a network is key - amazing things just seem to happen when people help each other. It seems especially important for Welsh people to help other Welsh people no matter where they are in the world. Wales is an amazing, but such a small country, and we should stick together where we can.
Living away from home, I am so pleased to be part of the GlobalWelsh community so I can easily connect back. Who knows, one day I might be the one offering some young person an opportunity - that would be amazing!
