Take a trip to Wales: 6 reasons to ‘fall’ for Autumn in Wales
As the leaves turn and the wood burners start to blaze there’s arguably no better place to be than Wales during the Northern Hemisphere’s autumn months. Whether you're returning to familiar places or exploring new corners of our beautiful country, autumn in Wales has something for everyone.
September 27th is World Tourism Day so to celebrate we’re shining a light on some of the best things about Autumn in Wales. From charming hikes to dips in the warm Autumn sea, here are six reasons ‘fall’ for autumn in Wales…
The Trails of Wales
I think we’d all agree, there’s nothing quite like taking a drive through the breathtaking Brecon Beacons or Eryri National Park in October. The rolling hills and valleys painted in shades of yellow, orange and red take your breath away!
If you are feeling adventurous, why not take a trek up Pen y Fan for panoramic views of the autumnal landscape stretching out below. Alternatively, explore one of the many forested trails, like the Four Waterfalls Trail, which begins with a peaceful valley walk before leading into a mysterious, charming forest. It's the perfect way to experience Wales' natural beauty and breathe in the fresh mountain air.
Beautiful Welsh castles
Autumn’s shorter days are perfect for exploring and immersing yourself in Wales’ rich history and folklore. With over 400 castles in Wales, you’re spoilt for choice. Whether it’s the impressive turrets of Caernarfon Castle you’re after or the moats of Caerphilly Castle. Welsh castles have it all!
Some castles, such as Craig y Nos in Powys—known as the most haunted castle in Wales—offer guided ghost tours that bring these eerie stories to life. Alternatively, you can explore the castles at your own pace, wandering through their dark corridors and imagining the haunting events that took place centuries ago.
Unbeatable cosy pubs
After a day of exploring, there's no better way to unwind than getting cosy in a proper Welsh pub with a roaring fire. A place at the heart of Welsh culture where you can indulge in ales for a true taste of Wales and tuck into some hearty Welsh grub like lamb cawl or corned beef pie - unbeatable!
Looking for a recommendation? Check out The Old Swan Inn, in Llantwit Major which dates back to the 12th century or The Plough and Harrow, Murton.
World-class Welsh coast
The Wales Coastal Path offers 870 miles of stunning coastline to explore, and autumn is the perfect time to experience its rugged cliffs, sandy beaches, and secluded caves as they transform with the season's colours. Cooler temperatures and fewer crowds make it ideal for peaceful scenic walks along the coast where the crisp autumn air invigorates your senses.
Why not explore the stunning Llŷn Peninsula in North West Wales. Stretching 180 kilometres, this trail is described as being remote, making it ideal for those of us who want to escape the hustle of bustle of life and appreciate a serene and peaceful escape.
Warm seas and surfing
During autumn, the sea retains the summer's warmth, often making the Welsh waters warmer than the air. This makes early morning autumn swims or surfs all the more appealing!
For adventurers walking the Wales Coastal Path, a stop at Pembrokeshire’s Whitesands Beach is a must. With breathtaking views of Ramsey Island and rich wildlife, including seabirds, seals, and porpoises, it’s an ideal spot for swimming, surfing, and relaxing. Barmouth Beach, located in North Wales, on the southern side of Snowdonia's most popular seaside resort and Rhosneigr Beach, on the coast of Anglesey are also great autumn surf spots.
Where culture and countryside collide
Nestled in rural Powys, Hay-on-Wye is the world’s first book town, so if it’s culture and countryside you’re looking for look no further than Hay Festival’s Winter Weekend.
Into its 25th year, the Winter Weekend will take place between the 28th November - 1st December 2024 and welcome world-class thought leaders and creatives from all over the world such as Matt Lucas, Hamza Yassin, Louise Minchin and Nigel Owens this year.
