Business Spotlight: Nomady's
Based in Abergavenny, Nomady’s is a videography, post-production and photography company, which specialises in creating bespoke, creative and quality digital content.
Nomady’s joined GlobalWelsh’s Business membership programme in 2023. We caught up with Founder, Jake Griffin to talk about his entrepreneurial journey and why there’s a growing demand for digital marketing services …
Can you tell us a little bit about Nomady’s
I am the sole operator of Nomady’s which is a digital content creation business, doing everything from videography, video editing, post-production, motion graphics and photography. The name stemmed from the principles of being flexible, adaptable and from the idea that I can work from anywhere - whether that be my desk at home or across the country.
I previously worked in a small marketing company that specialised in content creation for YouTube and social channels which I enjoyed. I helped that business grow from a team of two, to a team of six before deciding to branch out on my own and create Nomady’s in June of 2022.
With no previous experience of self-employment, besides a few gigs after university, the entire experience was completely new to me. Admittedly I was fresh to the industry but I knew I had the skills, thanks to my Media Production degree from Coventry University, and the drive to make something of the business. It was a big gamble to start the business, especially after working so hard to get my job at the time, but something was telling me it was time to go out on my own.
"Anyone who is looking for explainer videos, motion graphic videos or even simple promotional content can work with Nomady’s."
Can you tell me about some of the projects you’ve worked on?
My first job as Nomady’s was for an agency contractor and was a weekly, quick turnaround job specifically on a weekend. I was given material on a Friday evening which needed to be finished before Sunday afternoon and I worked with them until the end of 2023.
I also work with a London-based client called First Rate Marketing which specialises in web design. The great thing about working with companies like them is that you get to form relationships and mentor each other in your areas of expertise. I offer them competitive rates for my services and they’ve helped me make contacts and design my new website.
Another key contact is Streetbees, which are a consumer marketing research company based in London but they have bases across the world. I help them primarily with their LinkedIn and website, however, my biggest project with them was an extensive motion graphic video which highlights their achievements as a business. This was one of my favourite projects as I got to work with the entire team, including the CEO, and they’ve used that video to show investors and market their services.
"I love that my job is very broad and I get to have a peek into different businesses and experience different industries that I never would have known about prior to starting Nomady’s, which means I learn something new from every client I work with."
Do you specialise in servicing clients from particular industries?
I’ve worked with entrepreneurs including life coaches, estate agents and authors to bigger companies within the digital, environmental and vehicle industries. Anyone who is looking for explainer videos, motion graphic videos or even simple promotional content can work with Nomady’s.
I’ve previously worked with solicitors in Mayfair who only wanted some promotional material for their website, so although law isn’t my area of expertise I had a discussion with the team and we worked on some content together, where I highlighted their premises and services they could offer.
I love that my job is very broad and I get to have a peek into different businesses and experience different industries that I never would have known about prior to starting Nomady’s, which means I learn something new from every client I work with. I like the challenge of packing up all this new information and creating visually appealing content to help consumers gain a simplified version which offers them all the information they need from an outsider’s perspective. Every industry needs video content in some way and that’s something Nomady’s can help with. I love working with clients who are passionate about what they do, like me, as it, in turn, creates a positive and engaging working relationship that can deliver high-quality results. The final outcome will always be successful if you and your client are invested in the process.
How do you find and work with your clients?
I actually get a lot of referrals from current clients and I really appreciate the support. Through referrals I’ve worked with people in law firms, barber shops, authors and various other industries. There’s nothing quite like word of mouth and it can’t really be beaten when networking and forming new client relationships. Also, this industry is very saturated, there’s lots of people who can do similar work to me, so when you get these referrals you know you’re on the right track.
As a one man band, when you choose to work with me you get my undivided attention. Your project won’t be passed on to someone else and you’re able to communicate any questions or concerns with me directly. I pride myself on providing a flexible, personable and bespoke service and I think the gap in the market which Nomady’s fills is both the personable side and a bespoke solution with reliable communication, quality results and a quick turnaround time.
Why did you join GlobalWelsh?
I was referred to GlobalWelsh by my partner, so I did some research and realised that GlobalWelsh’s business membership offered me a way into a new networking market. There was no one offering a similar service on the GlobalWelsh Connect Business Directory, so I thought I could offer the community something new. I know I need to market myself better and networking is one of the best ways to start, so why not begin with my fellow Welsh businesses.
I like that you don’t need to be in Wales 24/7 to be a part of the community and it sounded like a great opportunity to meet clients around the world. My choice to join quickly paid off when I attended my first business cwtch, where I was introduced to fellow member James Ingram from Scienap. We quickly set up a meeting and began to work on a project together. It was a pleasure working with them and it shows the power of the GlobalWelsh network.
"I’ve also just acquired a drone to offer even more services to clients such as aerial videography and photography going in to 2024."
Where do you see Nomady’s going in the future?
I’d like to expand the range of portfolio clients I’ve worked with, to help enrich my knowledge and diversify the type of work that I do. I’ve also just acquired a drone to offer even more services to clients such as aerial videography and photography going in to 2024. I’d also love to be able to travel more with the business as this is another passion of mine. Although I don’t see this being an immediate priority I would like to grow the Nomady’s team and help spread the word of what we can do. I already work with several freelance editors and content creators so it would be great to bring them onboard as they already embody Nomady’s mission of a personable, quality and bespoke service.
