A Christmas message from GlobalWelsh
Annwyl ffrindiau GlobalWelsh,
2022 has been an unforgettable year for us all. A year of political and economic turmoil at home and abroad. A year where the world started its long recovery from COVID. But, amid all the uncertainty, 2022 has proved to be a momentous year for Wales. A year where we as a nation showed the world who we are. The year the Red Wall descended upon the gates of Qatar. The year where Wrexham won the hearts of the world. And the year we celebrated 50 years of Japanese investment in our country. 2022 was, indeed, the year Cymru declared to the world we are “Yma o Hyd”.
Here at GlobalWelsh, thanks to our fantastic team, ingenious members and visionary founding patrons and partners, we have continued our mission to empower Welsh business, home and away, and to increase Wales’ prosperity by connecting and mobilising our greatest asset, you the global Welsh.
We focused on four areas over the last twelve months:
- Facilitating investment into Wales and Welsh companies
- Enabling international trade
- Global mentoring, profile building and thought leadership
- And connecting the Welsh and their diaspora – in person and digitally
Here are just a few of the ways we furthered our mission:
- We hosted, co-hosted and supported 45 business events, including two Tîm Cymru World Cup events in London & Dubai featuring amazing Welsh sports leaders; and a Japanese-Welsh business accelerator exchange and entrepreneur pitch
- We delivered successful outcomes for a second year working with the Welsh Government focussed on Inward Investment, International Trade and Mentoring. We also exhibited at Export Wales in Cardiff and ran a six month international pilot study to find new ways to attract inward investment through diaspora engagement - resulting in a GlobalWelsh Connector network
- Our ground-breaking digital platform, Connect, was at the heart of our work – growing membership by 18 per cent, attracting 37 companies to our new business membership and launching our first vertical market hub for manufacturing (in partnership with Manufacturing Wales)
- We published our second annual research report into the attitudes of the North American Welsh diaspora which showed that trust in Wales and the profile of Wales continued to rise strongly
- Our academic links are highly valued by GlobalWelsh and we have always based our work on rigorous academic research. This year we supervised a Cardiff Business School project team as part of their MSc. And established a new partnership with Oxford University’s Saïd Business School
- We were proud to launch our first Charity of the Year partnership with the Urdd in its centenary year and we raised sponsorship for St John’s College, Cardiff, to compete in the F1 in Schools world final (they were runners up amongst 56 international teams) – look out for some entrepreneurs of the future!
The difficult and uncertain times to come makes the work we do all the more important. Growing connections between our diaspora is how we continue to build prosperity for Wales. Despite an uncertain business environment there is much to look forward to in 2023. The Rugby World Cup in France for one. It’s another amazing opportunity for Wales to showcase its character and excellence to the watching world. We as an organisation will be there along with our members, the global Welsh, helping to build a brighter Wales for our people wherever they may be.
Diolch a Nadolig Llawen,
Nan & Walter
Cymraeg:
Annwyl ffrindiau GlobalWelsh,
Mae 2022 wedi bod yn flwyddyn fythgofiadwy i ni gyd. Blwyddyn o helbul gwleidyddol ac economaidd gartref a thramor. Blwyddyn pan ddechreuodd y byd ei adferiad hir o COVID. Ond, ynghanol yr holl ansicrwydd, mae 2022 wedi bod yn flwyddyn bwysig i Gymru. Blwyddyn pan wnaethon ni fel cenedl ddangos i'r byd pwy ydyn ni. Y flwyddyn y disgynnodd y Wal Goch i Qatar. Y flwyddyn pan enillodd Wrecsam galonnau'r byd. A'r flwyddyn y buom yn dathlu 50 mlynedd o fuddsoddiad Japaneaidd yn ein gwlad. 2022 oedd y flwyddyn y datganodd Cymru i’r byd rydym ni “Yma o Hyd”.
Yma yn GlobalWelsh, diolch i’n tîm gwych, ein haelodau dyfeisgar a’n noddwyr a’n partneriaid sefydlu gweledigaethol, rydym wedi parhau â’n cenhadaeth i rymuso busnesau Cymreig, gartref ac oddi cartref, ac i gynyddu ffyniant Cymru drwy gysylltu a symud ein hased mwyaf, chi’r byd-eang Cymraeg.
Fe wnaethom ganolbwyntio ar bedwar maes dros y deuddeg mis diwethaf:
- Hwyluso buddsoddiad yng Nghymru a chwmnïau Cymreig
- Galluogi masnach ryngwladol
- Mentora byd-eang, adeiladu proffil ac arwain meddwl
- A chysylltu'r Cymry a'u gwasgariad – yn bersonol ac yn ddigidol
Dyma rai o’r ffyrdd y bu i ni ddatblygu ein cenhadaeth:
- Fe wnaethom gynnal, cyd-gynnal a chefnogi 45 o ddigwyddiadau busnes, gan gynnwys dau ddigwyddiad Cwpan y Byd Tîm Cymru yn Llundain a Dubai yn cynnwys arweinwyr chwaraeon gwych Cymru; a chyfnewid cyflymydd busnes Japaneaidd-Cymreig a maes entrepreneuraidd
- Cyflawnwyd canlyniadau llwyddiannus am ail flwyddyn o weithio gyda Llywodraeth Cymru yn canolbwyntio ar Fewnfuddsoddi, Masnach Ryngwladol a Mentora. Buom hefyd yn arddangos yn Export Wales yng Nghaerdydd a chynhaliom astudiaeth beilot ryngwladol chwe mis i ddod o hyd i ffyrdd newydd o ddenu mewnfuddsoddiad trwy ymgysylltu â’r alltud - gan arwain at rwydwaith Connector GlobalWelsh
- Roedd ein platfform digidol arloesol, Connect, wrth galon ein gwaith – gan gynyddu aelodaeth 18 y cant, denu 37 o gwmnïau i’n haelodaeth busnes newydd a lansio ein marchnad fertigol gyntaf gan ganolbwyntio ar gyfer gweithgynhyrchu (mewn partneriaeth â Manufacturing Wales)
- Cyhoeddwyd yr ail adroddiad ymchwil blynyddol i agweddau Cymry ar wasgar Gogledd America a ddangosodd fod ymddiriedaeth yng Nghymru a phroffil Cymru yn parhau i godi'n gryf
- Mae GlobalWelsh yn rhoi gwerth mawr ar ein cysylltiadau academaidd ac rydym bob amser wedi seilio ein gwaith ar ymchwil academaidd drylwyr. Eleni buom yn goruchwylio tîm prosiect Ysgol Busnes Caerdydd fel rhan o'u MSc. A sefydlodd bartneriaeth newydd ag Ysgol Fusnes Saïd Prifysgol Rhydychen
- Roeddem yn falch o lansio ein partneriaeth Elusen y Flwyddyn gyntaf gyda’r Urdd yn ei chanmlwyddiant a llwyddwyd i godi nawdd i St John’s College, Caerdydd, i gystadlu yn rownd derfynol y byd F1 mewn Ysgolion (roeddent yn ail ymhlith 56 o dimau rhyngwladol) – cadwch olwg am rai entrepreneuriaid y dyfodol!
Mae'r cyfnod anodd ac ansicr i ddod yn gwneud y gwaith a wnawn yn bwysicach fyth. Mae cysylltiadau cynyddol rhwng ein diaspora yn dangos sut rydym yn parhau i adeiladu ffyniant i Gymru. Er gwaethaf amgylchedd busnes ansicr mae llawer i edrych ymlaen ato yn 2023. Cwpan Rygbi'r Byd yn Ffrainc am un. Mae’n gyfle gwych arall i Gymru arddangos ei chymeriad a’i rhagoriaeth i’r byd gwylio. Byddwn ni fel mudiad yno ynghyd â’n haelodau, y Cymry byd-eang, yn helpu i adeiladu Cymru ddisgleiriach i’n pobl ble bynnag y bônt.
Diolch a Nadolig Llawen,
Nan a Walter
