Business Spotlight: Mountain Trike

27 Feb, 2025

Founded in 2007, Mountain Trike designs custom-built all-terrain wheelchairs, blending mountain bike technology with lightweight aluminium frames. Its innovative manual and powered models empower users of all abilities to explore and enjoy the outdoors with ease.

We caught up with founder and managing director, Tim Morgan, to learn more about this groundbreaking product…

Can you tell us about Mountain Trike and how the idea first came about?

I grew up in mid-Wales, surrounded by hills and mountains, which sparked my passion for mountain biking. Competing in downhill mountain bike races, I witnessed many injuries and realised there wasn’t a truly capable and practical all-terrain wheelchair that would get someone back out into the countryside after an accident which impacted their mobility.

Whilst studying at the University of Bath, I had the opportunity to choose my own master’s project, so I designed and built the first prototype of the Mountain Trike. It was incredibly well received by local wheelchair users, which inspired me to take it further.

After university, I started as a design engineer at Bentley, but I continued developing Mountain Trike in my spare time, determined to bring this vision to life. And that’s how it all began.

What makes Mountain Trike unique?

Drawing from my mountain biking background, I approached wheelchair design differently, creating a truly all-terrain solution. The Mountain Trike features a unique lever-drive system which allows users to propel themselves without touching the wheels, making it more efficient while keeping hands clean, unlike traditional wheelchairs.

With air suspension, disc brakes, and an innovative steering system, the Mountain Trike is built for off-road adventures while remaining practical for everyday use. Its lightweight yet robust chassis combines all these features, delivering a smooth, capable, and versatile ride across any terrain.

Why did you set up your business in England, and why do you want to expand into Wales?

After university, I partnered with a manufacturing company in Cheshire that supported the development of Mountain Trike by investing and providing a workspace. This made sense at the time to be close to our manufacturer. Now, I’d love to move back to Wales, both personally and professionally. My goal is to set up an R&D office and prototyping facility in Wales to further develop new models.

Through the GlobalWelsh network, I’ve seen many opportunities to collaborate with Welsh businesses and find support around the world.

Why did you join Global Welsh, and how has it supported you so far?

I first heard about GlobalWelsh through my friend Will Priestner of Radnor Automotive. Since joining, only a few months ago, I’ve had valuable conversations with members of the network, especially regarding investment.

We’re also looking to grow our presence in the USA, it has huge market potential for us. We already have a partner there but want to expand our distribution network. I recently participated in an event with the GlobalWelsh USA hub, which then connected me to a distributor in the mobility aid industry, exactly the type of contact we needed to expand further in the US.

You recently pitched at Connect to London, how was that experience?

It was a great experience! Unlike the long, detailed investment pitches I’ve done in the past, this event was focused more on people, networking and engagement. The video pitch idea was a great opportunity because it could be shared more widely, and as a result, I was contacted by a VC firm which is looking really promising. I also made some really valuable connections with other entrepreneurs and other investors.

What has been Mountain Trike’s biggest achievement so far?

By far the most rewarding part of what we do is hearing from customers who say our product has changed their lives. Many have shared stories of visiting the beach for the first time in years or climbing mountains they never thought possible. It’s incredibly fulfilling to see the impact Mountain Trike has on people’s independence and quality of life.

What’s next for Mountain Trike?

We're entering an exciting phase where we’re bringing some of our manufacturing in-house, a key step in our growth plan. This not only allows us to expand our product range but also take on subcontract manufacturing for other industries.

Currently, we offer five models that excel in off-road access, but as we grow, we’re looking to introduce more mainstream products. One key focus is developing a lower-cost day chair that retains Mountain Trike’s DNA while appealing to a broader market.  At the same time, we’re actively expanding our international sales network and bringing on new dealers to support our continued growth.
