Business Spotlight: Genletics

07 Feb, 2025

Genletics was founded in 2021 with a vision to create a one-of-a-kind physiological readiness test that offered athletes a way to determine the best time of day to train unique to them. The company has developed a proprietary algorithm to determine metabolic peak based on molecular data and circadian rhythm, aiming to optimise athletic performance. To date, the company has collaborated with some of Wales’ leading sports teams and are now looking to expand into medicine, particularly in cancer therapy.

We caught up with its founder and CEO, Adam Thomas to discuss the groundbreaking work Genletics are doing…

Could you start by telling me about Genetics and what inspired you to start the company?

The idea for Genletics came from my background in human genetics and a personal interest in understanding the biological factors behind peak performance. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I wanted to figure out the best time for me to work out, not just logistically but biologically. After diving into research on circadian rhythms and how energy reserves and metabolic profiles fluctuate throughout the day, I realised there was no existing test to pinpoint an individual's specific peak performance time. This realisation drove me to develop a method to identify it, and after validating the concept, I saw its potential application in elite sports.

Genletics was founded to redefine performance by focusing on when rather than just how. We’ve developed a proprietary algorithm that analyses molecular data and circadian rhythms to determine an individual’s metabolic peak - the time of day when they perform at their best. By predicting this unique performance window, we enable elite sports teams to optimise athlete performance, allowing them to train smarter, not harder.

Which markets are you currently focusing on?

We’re currently focused on elite sports teams, helping them redefine how they approach athlete performance through biological timing. Our analysis allows teams to profile entire squads, pinpointing when players are at their peak performance - both individually and collectively. This enables us to tailor specific aspects of training, optimising performance on both a personalised and squad-wide level. For example, many Premier League clubs are aiming to individualise their strength and conditioning programs, and we provide the critical data to support these player management decisions.

Our approach is grounded in scientific evidence showing that throughout the day, energy reserves, metabolic profiles, and athletic performance naturally fluctuate. By predicting when peak athletic performance occurs, we help athletes train and perform at a time when their bodies are primed and under less strain.

We’ve worked with Welsh teams such as the Ospreys, the FAW and Welsh Athletics. Their support has been invaluable in validating and proving the impact of our approach.

What sets Genetics apart from other personalised fitness solutions?

What makes Genetics unique is our focus on when you should train, not just how. Unlike other tools like wearables that provide general health data, we dive deeper to help you understand your body’s natural rhythms. Our tagline “You know how to train, we can tell you when” really sums it up, we’re here to help you unlock your peak performance by focusing on timing.

Using insights rooted in your DNA, we give athletes a completely personalised approach to performing smarter, not harder. It’s all about understanding you and what works best for your body.

You pitched at our Connect to London event last year. What was that experience like?

Pitching at Connect to London last year was both nerve-wracking and rewarding. I’ve been part of GlobalWelsh for a while, and there’s something truly special about being Welsh and connecting with the Welsh diaspora - it’s such a supportive and inspiring network.

It was actually my first-ever pitch, and I learned a lot. Despite the nerves, the experience was invaluable. I even had the chance to meet another Adam Thomas at the event, who is now an advisor for our company. That experience not only helped me grow but also prepared me for future pitches, like Tech Nation’s regional finals.

What’s next for Genletics?

We have a bold vision that goes beyond sports, with the ultimate goal of revolutionising healthcare. Timing isn’t just a critical factor in athletic performance, it profoundly impacts the effectiveness of medical treatments as well. For example, therapies like chemotherapy, arthritis medications, and hormone treatments have been shown to vary in effectiveness depending on the time of day they’re administered. By leveraging our precision circadian rhythm technology, we aim to personalise medical treatments and significantly improve patient outcomes.

To achieve this vision, we’re pursuing a two-pronged approach. In sports, we’re focused on securing our first commercial contracts, with the help of our newly appointed business development manager - a global rugby expert with great industry connections. This milestone will be supported by our key validation study, which will further strengthen our patent application and establish us as the gold standard in circadian rhythm testing.

On the healthcare side, we’re laying the groundwork for preclinical research, exploring applications in medicine that will allow us to demonstrate the transformative potential of our technology in improving treatment timing. To support these goals, we’re in the midst of a pre-seed funding round, targeting £750K, with 50% already secured. These funds will enable us to fully resource the company, expand within the sports market, and advance our research into healthcare applications.
