5 reasons to find yourself a diaspora mentor through GlobalWelsh
You may not realise it, but you probably need a mentor. Whether you’re looking for a step-up in your career or unsure how to adapt to a new leadership role or are looking to grow and scale your business but don’t know where to start. We can all feel a little lost sometimes and this is where enlisting a mentor can be a great support.
The role of a mentor is a unique one, a trusted person who can help you navigate the challenges and changes you’re facing in your career or business. Someone who may have dealt with something similar themselves and wants to share their wisdom, someone who can objectively guide you and hold you to account. At the risk of sounding dramatic, a good mentor can change your life.
From the perspective of diaspora, mentoring is one of the easiest and most rewarding ways someone can ‘pay it forward’ to those coming up behind them. Giving up just an hour or two a month to help someone who needs an ear is an amazing thing to do. For GlobalWelsh members based all over the world, this is one of the most effective ways that they can support Welsh people and businesses. In our recent Brain Drain study a whopping 62% of respondents said they would be willing to mentor someone. So what are you waiting for, head to GlobalWelsh Connect today and match with a mentor!
In acknowledgement of International Mentoring Day, here are five reasons why you should find yourself a diaspora mentor through GlobalWelsh…
“Mentoring is a brain to pick, an ear to listen, and a push in the right direction.” John C. Crosby
Unique global experiences and perspectives
It’s important that a mentor is objective. Matching with a mentor who lives in another city or country means they will have a completely different outlook on a situation without any of the biases that you might have asking a friend or colleague.
Living and and working within a different culture, they will also be able to draw on their vastly different experiences offering a fresh perspective.
A natural desire to see you succeed
Don’t underestimate the power of ‘hiraeth’. A Welsh word that’s hard to translate into English but essentially means ‘a longing for home’. When someone leaves Wales they feel a constant sense of hiraeth which is the driving force to want to connect and give back.
Mentoring is an incredible way to give back and nothing gives a diaspora that warm fuzzy feeling more than helping a fellow Welsh person on their path to success.
You already have something in common
When we first embark on any relationship we are always looking for that common ground, that one thing you share with someone else. Diaspora mentors and their mentees will already have that from day one… Wales!
Shared interests are the key to a fruitful mentoring relationship!
A mentoring relationship built to last
Many mentoring programmes are transactional. Ours is not, our mentors are passionate Welsh people who want to help their fellow countrymen and women. Many of our mentoring matches have evolved out of mentoring and into long-term arrangements whether that’s more formal consultancy or advisory roles, investment or NED positions.
Whilst we can’t make any promises, each match is unique, the fact is diaspora mentors have sticking power that other mentoring programmes may not offer. This is the power of diaspora.
It’s as easy as un, dau, and tri…
